Southeast Los Angeles Collaborative Community Tour: Empowering SELA residents

// By Jacqueline Brennan

When ten separate agencies work together to support and empower residents in ten different municipalities and unincorporated areas – big things can happen. You’ll find out how this network of organizations is putting its collective muscle behind uplifting communities in Southeast LA during LA Inside & Out’s Southeast Los Angeles Collaborative Community Tour.

The Southeast Los Angeles Collaborative leverages the expertise and resources of its member organizations to increase nonprofit capacity and spur revitalization in the communities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Florence-Firestone, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Maywood, South Gate, Vernon and Walnut Park. The Collaborative focuses on key needs in the Southeast LA (SELA) region and has three strategic goals: to build a robust infrastructure of local nonprofits, to inform and engage residents for increased civic participation, and to provide data and research specifically intended to explore the possibilities of this region.

Collaborative members include the Alliance for a Better Community, East Los Angeles College, East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, Families in Schools, First 5 LA, Hub Cities, Human Services Association, Pat Brown Institute at California State University, Los Angeles, Southeast Community Development Corporation, and the Southeast Rio Vista YMCA.

According to the Director of the SELA Collaborative, Dr. Wilma Franco, “At the core of the Collaborative’s work is the shared vision that the voice of the community is vital to transforming the SELA region, and no one organization or sector can do this work alone.”

During the tour, you’ll learn more about this historically under-resourced, yet vital area of Los Angeles County. And during lunch, you’ll meet some of the Collaborative members working together to uplift the SELA communities and learn how the Collaborative is addressing pressing regional issues, including: regionalism, social justice, equity, local accountability, and collective impact.

LA Inside & Out tours are half-day immersion experiences where you’ll actively participate in a journey into dynamic LA neighborhoods where real changework is happening, and be inspired by what you learn to create real change in your community, too.
