Managing the impact of power on your changework
// By Christian Clansky
The Upswell workshop Identifying and Managing Power in Social Change Work will address the issue of power head on – how it may show up and affect your work within your organization and your collaboration with external partners. You’ll also learn strategies to manage it – guided by Kimberly Walker, Associate Director, Learning and Development, Arabella Advisors and Ph.D. candidate, Leadership and Change, Antioch University.
“I’m looking forward to connecting with people at Upswell who work in this space, because power shows up in so much of our work,” says Kimberly. “We’ll have an honest conversation about that and tie it to some of the other topics we talk about so much today, rightfully so, like equity and systems change.”
The workshop will include models from both Kimberly’s professional experience as a consultant, and her work as a Ph.D. candidate. “I’m really excited to bring in some themes that may seem more academic but have a more practical application, and the different frameworks for thinking about power (learn more about Kimberly). We’ll also do some exercises and consider key questions to ask yourself, your organization, and your partners to better understand how power might be showing up in the room.
“This workshop will give changemakers the opportunity to talk with other folks about what can be a challenging, but really vital topic. And I’m excited to hear and learn from folks in the room, and to facilitate and be a part of the conversation.”
Identifying and Managing Power in Social Change Work is happening Thursday, November 14, from 2:30 pm – 3:45 pm
