Connecting Veterans and Youth to Overcome Neighborhood Trauma

Location: Salon A-3 (Lower Level)

Urban Warriors, the flagship mentoring program of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, connects experienced military veterans with youth in some of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods. A mentor and mentee will share their experiences and talk about the meaningful connection between these two groups, both having experienced severe trauma in their lives and understanding all too well the feeling of living in constant danger and hostility.

During the 16-week program, veterans mentor and teach youth critical coping mechanisms and valuable tools to process their emotions and thoughts — helping youth channel their anger and other strong emotions, enhance their communication skills, and become more mindful of everyday situations.
