Be the Eye of the Storm: The Unshakeable Depth of Being
When the chaos of life hits, the art of non-reaction can teach you to make a conscious choice rather than a reactive one. Choice over reaction is the result of a disciplined mind. You can learn to use chaos – from the world or from your mind – as fuel for your own inner work. You use mindful awareness to consume all of life from the vast reservoir of the unchanging silence within. Session will include a talk, meditation and Q+A session. Presented by Kashi Atlanta
Building a Bigger Table of Problem-Solvers: How the Nonprofit Sector Can Advance Inclusion and Belonging while Accelerating Change
The divides in America seem stark these days. Yet, there is a growing movement of doers and leaders across the nation advancing work that builds bridges and larger communities of problem-solvers. Not only is this necessary to strengthen our social fabric, it’s critical to a functioning, and safe, Democracy. Building social cohesion by re-connecting people can bring more energy to your cause, as well as mitigate the feelings of alienation and loneliness that lead to divisions in communities. Learn about the small and large changes you can make to your programmatic work in order to build a bigger and more inclusive community of problem-solvers. Sponsored by Walmart
YMCA of the USA
Connecting Veterans and Youth to Overcome Neighborhood Trauma
Urban Warriors, the flagship mentoring program of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, connects experienced military veterans with youth in some of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods. A mentor and mentee will share their experiences and talk about the meaningful connection between these two groups, both having experienced severe trauma in their lives and understanding all too well the feeling of living in constant danger and hostility. During the 16-week program, veterans mentor and teach youth critical coping mechanisms and valuable tools to process their emotions and thoughts — helping youth channel their anger and other strong emotions, enhance their communication skills, and become more mindful of everyday situations. Presented by YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago
How to #ShiftThePower in Community-Driven Grantmaking
While most organizations today want to put more decision-making power into the hands of the communities they serve, some aren’t sure where to begin or are discouraged by setbacks. At this workshop, we will share practical lessons on how to empower the people who know their communities best to make decisions about where resources should go. You will get tested tactics and best practices and create a space for sharing practical advice and success stories to inspire change. Presented by Pillars Fund
How to Overcome Your Fear of Advocacy
As phobias go, talking to elected officials can rank right up there with spiders, snakes, and heights. But advocacy doesn’t have to be scary. By simply telling your own story, coupled with the latest research and data, you can engage naturally with decisionmakers at all levels. Whether you are a community organizer, philanthropist, nonprofit leader, or a dynamic changemaker in your own right, this session will equip you to be the best advocate you can be.
