Jan Masaoka is the Chief Executive Officer of the California Association of Nonprofits. As CEO, Jan sets the strategic direction for CalNonprofits and its more than 10,000 members. Jan has extensive nonprofit experience, including as the executive director of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services for 14 years. She is a leading writer, thinker, and speaker on nonprofit organizations with particular emphasis on boards of directors, business planning, and the role of nonprofits in society.
Her books include: The Best of the Board Café, All Hands on Board: The Board of Directors in All-Volunteer Organizations, Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability, and The Nonprofit’s Guide to HR. Jan founded and wrote the Blue Avocado magazine, growing it to 64,000 subscribers, before leaving in late 2015.
Jan was named Nonprofit Executive of the Year by The NonProfit Times, and is an eight-time designee as one of the “Fifty Most Influential” people in the nonprofit sector nationwide. She has testified on nonprofit policy issues at the federal and state levels, and her perspective on nonprofits has been featured in a number of media outlets, including the New York Times, USA Today, Nonprofit Quarterly, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Her volunteer work includes serving as chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Wellness Center and founding chair of Community Initiatives; she currently serves on the National Public Policy Committee of Independent Sector.
